Course Description for Robotics, Creative Writing and Drama in IHS

2016-03-17

Engineering and Robotics

The Engineering and Robotics course elective is completely project-based. During the first part of the course, students are introduced to principles of engineering that begin with concept, then proceed to design, planning, and execution. Students work first on building a 3-D printer. This printer has both hardware and software bases. Building the printer involves the use of Arduino (a common computerized circuit board used in professional engineering and robotics). The second part of the course utilizes both Arduino and the 3-D printer to develop simple robots that are capable of being programmed and that make use of servos, cameras, distance sensors, and other instruments. Through this course, students learn how to understand, design, and work with cutting-edge technology and apply it in ways that are both innovative and practical.

Creative Writing

The Creative Writing program is a course unique to our High School which aims to build students’ English language fluency, creative ability, independent thinking, and capacity for self-expression through writing. In the course of their Creative Writing studies, students analyze well-known works of fiction to see how various literary techniques are employed, then practice writing their own original pieces using what they have learned. A wide range of genres – from folktales to science fiction and from Gothic horror to heroic epics – are examined and attempted, and students learn and apply the detailed processes and mechanics behind building a compelling story. In addition, every semester a literary magazine, Camera Obscura, is published, featuring original work from both students and staff members. As the first experimental High School course to become successfully integrated into our core curriculum, the Creative Writing program embodies the spirit of innovation and “building from the ground up” that lie at the core of Xiwai’s philosophy.

Drama

Drama is a required component of our High School curriculum. The goals of our Drama program are: 1) to develop students’ understanding of drama through both theoretical and practical study; 2) to enable students to realize the performance possibilities of texts and other resources; 3) to encourage the use of dramatic forms and structures to communicate feelings and ideas to an audience; 4) to help students acquire and develop myriad dramatic skills, both individually and through group work; 5) to develop understanding of the processes leading to dramatic performance and the elements involved in creating a performance (including script writing, set design, lighting, direction and stage management); and 6) to encourage appreciation and enjoyment of drama. By immersing themselves in all aspects of theatrical production, students not only become experts in many areas of drama; they also cultivate abilities, talents, and confidence that will stand them in good stead when they pursue further study abroad.
