Kenny’s Tips
Finals week can be a stressful time for all students – and for teachers! So, knowing how to properly prepare for finals is the key to avoiding stress and facing every single one of your exams. Of course, all students would love to relax by receiving massages or by staying in bed and playing video games.
But, we all know this isn’t really possible. Tests are the best way to show what you have learned. How then can we lower stress and know that we’re on the right track to excel in each course? Well, here are some proven methods that will have you focused and better prepared for final exams.
01
Say NO to cramming
Study in intervals! Studying for 20-50 minute and giving yourself 5-10 minutes in between are more beneficial than cramming. Distributing learning over time leads to long-term retention,
02
Say YES to cardio
Science says that just 20 minutes of cardio can improve your memory. Whether you’re dancing, jogging or busting a sweat by walking, exercise will increase your energy level and reduce the effects of stress. Very important!
03
Balanced Diets
Everybody knows you should eat breakfast the day of a big test. Research suggests that high-carb, high-fiber, slow-digesting foods are the best. But what you eat a week in advance matters, too. The best diet for studying is a balanced one that includes fruits and vegetables, When you study, your brain consumes glucose, so take a five-minute break every hour to let your body produce more fuel for your studying. Eating a healthy snack is very beneficial and can make a significant difference (almonds, fruits, and yogurt are good choices).
04
Alternate study place
Shake up your exams routine! Studying all the time in one place can be tiring. According to the New York Times, simply alternating the room where a person studies improves retention. Try alternating your study spots between home, a class room, and a quiet coffee house.
05
Time management
Cramming causes anxiety, which lowers your ability to retain information. By creating a balanced study plan and schedule, you will be able to study each subject in its entirely and ultimately boost your test performance.
06
Avoid the all-nighter
Many students stay up all night (or very late) the night before a test, but it is a bad idea. All-nighters impair reasoning and memory for as long as four days. As a result, you will receive lower grades. So, get a good night’s sleep and expect to perform better on tests. (Quick tip: Review the toughest material right before going to bed the night before the test.)
07
MINIMIZE distractions
Research shows that while many teens prefer to study while listening to music, texting friends, or watching television, they are less likely to retain information that way. If you must listen to music, stick to instrumental music and consider downloading study tools to keep you focused!
Alex’s Tips
Sleep and eat well. If you don’t feel your best, you won’t do your best.
Review your notes. Look through your notes and try to explain everything in more detail. Make sure your friends understand your explanation.
Don’t just look at something and say, “I understand this.” If you can’t explain it, you don’t understand it. Just because it looks familiar doesn’t mean you know it.
Budget your time. You should spend more time studying for harder subjects and less time studying for easier subjects.
Use your interests. If you can find something about the material that interests you, you will have an easier time remembering it – try to connect your studies to your own experience.
