Instructions on Studying Abroad——

Not long ago our school was honored with the presence of Ross Jennings, vice president of Green River College, who prepared a lecture for the International High School students and their families called, “Epic or Fail? It All Depends On Your University.” The purpose of the lecture was to help students better understand the American university system so that they can prepare to and succeed in their studies abroad.

Vice President Ross began the lecture by asking the following three questions in rapid succession:

      1、What is your target country?

      2、What is your target school?

      3、What is your target major?

These questions may seem simple, but they took students and parents by surprise. The audiences looked at each other, but no one knew how to reply. Vice President Ross then said that a thorough consideration of these questions was the most important way to prepare to study abroad. Indeed, only if you have a goal can you move forward with confidence. In just the same way, if an athlete running the hundred meter dash doesn’t keep his target in sight, how can he confidently charge in the direction of his dreams?

For our students, going abroad is an amazing way to advance their studies and a novel cultural experience, but also an arduous (if dazzling) campaign. In the course of this campaign, the most important battle is the battle of daily living in a foreign country as well as the struggle to earn their diploma. But how should they approach studying at a foreign university? How can they become a successful university students?

Vice President Ross gave the following suggestions:

1.After you begin attending courses, make an appointment with your counselor to discuss your major.

2.Master English – and not only in class.

3.Don’t go it alone – take advantage of opportunities for help.

4.Establish yourself off campus – make friends (but stay away from alcohol and drugs).

5.Learn both how to accept and to overcome setbacks.

6.Break through cultural barriers – adapt to the local way of life and local customs – take part in cultural fusion.

Suggestions

Vice President Ross’s lecture was both rich and approachable, and he discussed problems that were relevant and interesting to those in attendance. Like the man himself, his speech was full of humor. His enriching activities and lively presentation were of immense benefit to our students. This enthusiastic and hospitable “foreign friend”, before his lecture ended, did not forget to make the following pact with our students: next time they are studying abroad in America, they should come to his house for a barbecue. Aren’t you moved?
