English Speaking Contest of International High ——你是最闪耀的星

Have you heard of TED talks? 

Do you know anyone who is great at public speaking? 

If you do, then you must know the importance of speech. 

 Carnegie once said: "Interpersonal communication contributes 85% to a person’s speech, his professional skills only contribute 15%. Language communication and the ability to express oneself (known as eloquence) is a big part of a person’s life and has a profound impact on our lives. 

Nowadays in our society, we know the value of effective or eloquent speech. If one’s speech is not expressed effectively, it will be difficult to be understood and get recognition and affirmation from others. Good communication skills can reduce unnecessary conflict and allow us to express our ideas. Eventually, it can help us have a better life and future career. 

In the spirit of positive and effective communication and working to improve our English learning atmosphere, an English speaking competition was held in the report room of the administration building on the afternoon of October 30th by the Xiwai International High School. This event was sponsored by Do Commitment. The theme of the competition was “Technology in Education”. The judges were made up of two foreign teachers, two Chinese English teachers and two students. There were 20 contestants who are presently the top students of their English classes. All our contestants were full of energy. They expressed their opinions with excellent English and gained massive applause from the audience. 

Ex-chairman of EMAP and 12H student Gabriel Gu called upon every one of us to seize every minute in our education process and be a better global citizen. He completely departed from the text and extemporized in a very energetic fashion during his speech. Gerald from 12A talked about his opinion on college education, he reckoned that the biggest function of a college education is that it could help us to better know and find ourselves and live a good life. It was so amazing to hear grade 12 students with such unique opinions. 

Clark Wan from 10H, using an excellent American accent, won First Place with his humorous and inspiring speech. Airee Huang won “the Best Dressed” Award; Gabriel Gu won “the Best Interaction” Award and Lenny Wang won “the Most Confident” Award. Every contestant’s thoughts observed during their speeches deserves our deep thinking. This competition provided students a stage to show their talents and passion. It brought us a chance to communicate. It enhanced our courage. The competition came to close at 4 pm.  Doc. Lin praised our contestants and the competition urging us to foster and enhance our Xiwai spirit. School administrators expressed the idea that our school will continue to hold more activities like this one to create opportunities for our students to express themselves and engage with their peers and staff. 

In our education system, we are often afraid to let students study on their own or allow them to simply “write down” their thoughts without also being able to “speak” their thoughts. Many of our students will be studying abroad and will face some challenges being in another culture and amongst different communities of peoples.  As a result, it is even more imperative that they learn now how to express themselves well and communicate their ideas clearly.

卡耐基说：一个人的成功85%是靠他的人际沟通和演说能力，只有15%跟他的专业技能相关。语言沟通能力和表达能力（可称之为口才）伴随着人的一生并对人的一生产生深远的影响。

在当今社会，口才的重要性不言而喻。一个很有才能的人，如果没有一个好口才，不能把自己所想很好的表达出来，也就很难得到别人的肯定与认可。良好演讲能力与口才，能够帮助我们减少不必要的麻烦，能把我们自己的想法传递出去，也能够帮助我们更好的生活与发展事业。

为了更好的为同学们营造英语学习气氛，锻炼学生英语口语表达能力，2017年10月30日下午，西外外国语学校高中国际课程部举办了一场以“科技教育”为主题的英语演讲比赛，由独课教育赞助。本次评委由2名外教、2名英语中教、2名学生组成。共有20位参赛选手。选手们出类拔萃，精神饱满，以流畅的英语表达了自己的观点，出色地回答了评委们提出的问题，赢得了观众们的阵阵掌声。

你一定会惊讶，这些学生，当他们走上演讲台的那一刻起，他们就是真正的演说家，那么从容不迫，娓娓道来，特别有范儿.......

前学生会主席顾傲同学以慷慨激昂的语言激励大家努力成为教育中的精英，做一个合格的世界公民。十年级的万子轩同学用自己幽默又流利的纯美式英语赢得了每个评委的青睐，夺得本次演讲比赛的一等奖。黄逸佳同学赢得了“最佳着装奖”；顾傲同学赢得了“最佳互动奖”；王越成同学赢得了“最自信选手”。

每个选手的演讲都有着严谨的逻辑，选手们新颖的观点值得我们去认真推敲，选手们提出的现实问题值得我们去思考。此次演讲比赛给同学们提供了一个展现自我、提升自我的舞台，增进了同学和老师们之间的交流，传递了正能量，更增强了同学们的自信心。

继上次辩论赛后，我校国际课程部再次发力，借助演讲比赛这一契机来锻炼和培养学生的演讲能力、表达能力。在教育中，我们最怕孩子只埋头学习，只会“写下来”而不会“说出来”。大胆地“说出来”多么重要啊！何况我们的学生将来会走出国门，面对的是更广阔的空间。他们更需要学会如何表现自己，说出自己的观点。我们的孩子，不仅要说，更要会说。提升学生表达能力，是学校参加高规格辩论赛和举办演讲比赛的目的。林校长也对本次比赛给予了肯定，鼓励每一位参赛者，希望他们将西外的精神发扬光大。校领导表示以后会多举行类似活动，给同学们更多展现自己的机会！

《毛遂自荐》中说道：一言之辩，重于九鼎之宝；三寸之舌，强于百万之师。具备良好的表达能力和口才，是学生提升综合素质的关键，也是西外培养国际公民而不遗余力要做的事情。因为它不仅代表着一种力量，更能彰显一种价值。
